Cartography of Night is a map-film constructed from photographs of the Mars surface taken by the 3 Mars rovers. Each image and set of coordinates corresponds to an actual location on Mars, and feels out a world of night. Minha
Park collects the photographs that these three rovers (cameras)—Curiosity, Opportunity, and Spirit—have taken at different moments and in different locations across a span of more than 10 years. She takes these still photographs, taken continuously over long lengths of time, and animates them at a rate of frames-persecond (fps) that the rovers’ movements can be apprehended by the human eye/time span. This work visualizes a moving-image-map that the Mars rovers produce through the feelers they put out into the dark.
