A Story of Elusive Snow
14min, HD, single channel video, b&w + color, stereo sound, 2013
A Story of Elusive Snow (2013) is a film about snowman. As Christmas approaches in Los Angeles, Minha Park, reminiscing about Seoul’s snow, undertakes an impossible journey to find snow in this city. Ironically, this reckless attempt brings her to encounter the diverse representations of snow in LA. Produced by Hollywood movie special effects companies, such as Snow Business and Magic Snow, these materials are used to create white Christmas decorations and movie special effects for winter scenes. The film captures magical moments when artificial snow falls in LA, juxtaposing them with winter scenes from classic Hollywood films shot in LA. This unmelting snow is the alchemy that turns elusive things into eternal, serving also as a metaphor for film media itself that captures disappearing moments. These representations of snow are not only illusions of the immigrant city of LA, but also are the strangers themselves.
