The deserts of California conjure mirages. These apparitions are not fake, but reflections of realities that actually exist somewhere. With the rise of green screens and 3D VFX effects the demand for physical SFX effects and sets has declined, leaving many of them redundant. Eventually, they are absorbed into military bases in the California desert for realistic war simulations. The desert can take many forms: sometimes a future planet where aliens roam, at other times Baghdad during war, or even a place onto which hippie hallucinations are projected.
캘리포니아의 사막들은 신기루를 불러낸다. 이 유령들은 가짜가 아니라 어딘가에 실제로 존재하는 것들이 반사되어 온 것들이다. 그린스크린과 3D 특수효과 산업이 성장함에 따라 반대로 물리적 특수효과와 세트에 대한 수요가 감소해 그것들은 현실세계에 잉여로 남겨진다. 결국 이들은 리얼한 전쟁 시뮬레이션을 위한 캘리포니아 사막의 군사기지로 흡수된다. 이 사막은 때로는 외계인들이 돌아다니는 미래 행성이고, 전쟁이 벌어지는 바그다드이며, 히피들의 환각이 투영되는 곳이다.
